ME: Everywhere I’ve read stuff about you guys defines your style as “sleaze rock.” Is this accurate? What do you guys describe your style as?
SR: We’re definitely sleazey, but as far as the music goes we are 100% rock n roll. Our sound, our look, our vibe, it’s the all around combination of the greatest elements of rock’s heyday, with a brand new twist.
ME: You pay homage to Hollywood with the appropriately titled “Hollywood.” What does Hollywood mean to you? SR: Hollywood is our hometown, and at the same time our dream getaway. We play there, we party there, it’s the world’s rock n roll capitol.
ME: The Sunset Strip is famous for breeding the raucous, sexy rock of the eighties and nineties and is the home of many legendary bands, i.e. Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. How does playing these same clubs feel?
SR: Well, it’s history. Every great band that has stepped on the Sunset Strip, played on the Whisky stage, and indulged in the debauchery has left its mark not only there, but on the world. We’re hoping we can make the same impact.
ME: What is your favorite club to play? Give us a good story from there.
SR: The Whisky A Go Go is our absolute favorite place to play. And lucky for us, we’re one of their favorite bands! We’ve got quite a few infamous stories from past Whisky shows, and after playing a packed gig there earlier this year, as support for a supposedly more major headliner, and after we played, half the crowd emptied the club and most of them partied with us! Some crazy girls at that one…
ME: Would your style work anywhere else besides Hollywood?
SR: We make it work! If you see any of us out on the street, any city, any club, anywhere, we’re gonna be who we are, sound how we sound and look how we look. If we’re not accepted, fuck em! But so far complaints have been few and far between.
ME: Describe a typical aftershow/party?
SR: Just your typical sex, drugs, drink, and rock n roll.
ME: I also read that you guys started out when you were very young. Do you ever get flack for being so young?
SR: We did start out very young…most people don’t realize we’ve been together for over 5 years now. We started when we all met in high school, and overcame a lot of shit for being the young guns in town. It took us a long time to get here, we like to think that we’re still young, but we’re ready.
ME: In today’s digital society, how a band markets itself on the internet is very important. After plugging “Scarlet Rose” into internet search engines, the first two hits are other bands named Scarlet Rose (one is a country gospel group and the other a pop-rock group from Germany). What plans do you have to set yourselves apart?
SR: That’s true. We have on several occasions considered changing the name, as recently as a few months ago. But then we always come back to Scarlet Rose…we’ve just had it so long that its become a part of who we were. It would be tough to change now.
ME: What is your biggest attribute as a band?
SR: We’re different. There are too many copycats in the world and we’re proud to say we’re a band that definitely stands out in the crowd.
ME: What kind of gear do you play?
SR: We endorse Gibson guitars, and are big fans of Marshall, Line 6 and Ampeg amps, and Zildjian cymbals. And we do it all wearing Full On Clothing.
ME: What else is in the future for Scarlet Rose?
SR: We’re planning on releasing some new material this summer, designing more merchandise, and planning to get out of California for a few days this summer! All the updates are on our website www.myspace.com/scarletrose.
ROCK N ROLL!
